It's been a long week without any new Menards products...but. my credit card looks better

Ha, thanks to your efforts in sharing the Menard's products with the forum (you really should be considered the Menard's O Gauge Ambassador!!!), my balance is a little higher considering recent purchases of the Power and Light Plant, Train Station, and Red Owl Grocery (along with a few die cast pieces).

That said, I too feel a bit of withdrawal as I think their products are quite excellent. Hoping their next building is another home run.

My local Menards store shelfs have been thinned out quite a bit, All the hopper cars and tank cars are depleted. Still have a lot of the Army rolling stock and the flatcars with Komatsu backhoes. The boxcars are mostly the green and blue pastel varieties and they have at least one of every building left. I think thats gonna be the last for 2016. I did order two more Milwaukee Road hoppers and the free UP trucks they should be in on Monday when the store gets its weekly delivery.

I've searched already, but don't see this answer. Was there a group of NS "heritage" hopper cars announced? It seemed to me that the N&W, PRR, and RDG cars all came out of nowhere, and everyone knew all about them. Are there more like this coming?

Sounds like at this time, maybe, they will be on the planning stage at some point in time. but as of right now, no..

It is lean times when there are no posts from Mark. But closing in on Christmas there could be an announcement or two  that will knock our socks off sending us to apply for home equity loans to buy all the good things that will be coming from Menards.................Paul

I do believe with all the products that have come out in the last few months, we could be in for a little lull, just like last year.. But.. who knows, Mark will surprise us when he knows. It's nice to know the OGR forum is the first to know when a new product is coming out.. Bob

Twenty some days, before Christmas is no time to have a lull. We should be getting hit with three or more products a week. I wonder, if Menard's had several hoppers all set to be delivered, when so many flaws turned up on their Reading hopper.  Therefore, putting everything on hold until the nesscescary corrections can be made.

Please don't get me wrong here, but Lionel or MTH doesn't bring out 3 or more products a week before the holidays. And , as for the so called hopper problem, many hundreds of those were sold with very little problems at all. As Mark said a while back, it takes over a year from product development to delivery and with all the Hanjin problems, the other products just may be waiting to get to the docks. just my 2 cents worth.. Having just dealt with delivery problems of an unrelated item, I can only wonder what stuff would cost if they were Made in America like GarGraves and Ross. If they can make competitively priced track here, why can't others make rolling stock here? I don't know what the profit margin is for GG/Ross, but it must be enough for someone to be content with their lifestyle.

You Know Bob, you do such a great job with the Menards Trucks changing them to whatever you wish. This would be a good time to take one of your engines and go the other way and make it a Menards engine for your Menards only layout. Then post picture and a video!

This is interesting. I put the engine house in my cart online and went to check out. It said the shipping was around $6. I forgot about the Union Pacific give away so I went back and added it. Another $10 was added to my shipping. So it's really not a free truck....LOL.

same thing happened to me so I just have everything shipped to the store for free.  I am guessing you may not have that option ):

The credit card bill came this week, wife was not happy. Had the Red Owl store and train station on it. OUCH!!!!!  At least I bought them during the 11% rebate week! I originally decided against the station, but after I saw it in person, I had to have it. Had to rearrange some track to make it fit, but it it looks GREAT!

If this is a caboose release and comes along with another 11%, then your savings just earned you a free Military caboose  !

Let her know that you couldn't afford not to buy em !

I like your logic, it is like getting trains for FREE!!!!!!

Hey Mark,

Quick question, really like the buildings and the lights but was wondering if you might you publish a wiring diagram of the buildings so I could figure a way to dim the outside lights in the American Power and Light Station, Train Station and Red Owl.  For example I would like to dim the lights on the Red Owl so the flashing sign light is brighter in comparison.  If dimming isn't feasible, that's fine, just a thought.

I dimmed the Red Owl lights down by laying a strip of white styrene in front of the light strip to dim it down a bit.

I stopped this morning at Menards to pick up my Milwaukee Road hoppers and two free UP trucks. I think I'll order online from now on because you get the nice cardboard boxes plus the plastic clamshells. I checked the store shelfs and notice this sale tag for this flatcar with sunshine bus, has anyone seen this? I checked the website and sku could not be found. So I wonder what this is?

Franktrain, nice pick up! If you live close to Menards that's the way to go.

My wife told me the mother in law went to Menards to get me something train car, building, something. Then she let it slip that she had them take it out of the box and put it on the track to make sure it was o gauge, LOL she didn't trust them and she doesn't know anything about trains! I had to laugh!!!

Good Day,

Can the coal loads be removed? Are they fixed to the body of the hopper?

Best Regards,

No problem, just take a hooked screwdriver  in the center of the load and it will pop right out. Some have  a little  glue, but not much. Bob

Franktrain, those hopper look great, I just ordered the Pennsylvania NS set! How do yours run?

I have four of the MR hoppers and had one issue where the axle was out of the side frame. I just squeezed the side frames and fixed in axle and have had no problems since. I have been running on a 036 loop of fastrack that has some turnouts and have had no running issues. Looking at the trucks they may have some problems on 027 track with the wheels hitting the ladders. I'm going to get out a loop and check and see if the clear.

I am certain that more Menard's trains will be coming. What I like about Menards  is that as the undisputed price leader they are making the hobby affordable again.  This is very important for any new individuals considering the model train hobby. Beautifully painted box cars, hoppers and flat cars with metal trucks for $19.95.   They may be selling for twice what they cost to produce, but you still can't beat that deal.

what year did Menards get into the train biz

Bill,

Cabinet Bob's correct. Our very first Menards exclusive flatcar was built by Lionel in 2007. However, we have been selling train sets in our stores for many years.

We have really expanded upon our selection over the last couple of years. I am excited for things to come!

Your gondolas with coal loads are just super. I thought about putting some real coal loads in them but couldn't find any that would fit. Any chance Menard's would get into the real coal load business, or does anyone have a helpful link to some?

I also thought about smearing the tacky glue on one of the ones that came with it, but need some more pulverized coal to stick on it so it is not too over loaded. Any idea where to get that?
