I'm not sure about this engine,, an RS -3 with a 3 volt board started to smoke and we immediately took it off the track.

Took the shell off and can't find anything out of order, Feature and factory reset , everything works except one motor , the one with the tack reader, It will every now and then move a little bit.   nothing binding truck or shorting out. . won't move in conventional either except for the odd spurt.

How can you tell if a motor is bad and do motors go bad very often???? I do have a spare but... don't feel like changing it out unless I really have to.

Thank Joe and G.... Used a  spare battery clip & 9 volt ...

Motor kaput.   I went through my junk drawer and found a motor with tack reader. Just finished getting it back together, all is well although it took me all friggin day to do it. Thanks for your replies.

There were a few choice words when I first tried it but then  remembered I had pulled the plug from the circuit board.

Glad you got it.  A Battery is a good quick test, and I always do it with upgrades to make sure wire orientation is correct.  But motors can run and be bad, so the current check with a DC source is also wise.  Ohm meter is the easy first step.  Failed motor can be open.

Always remove harness before appling power to test a component.  G
