Hi All,

I have a PS3 4-6-0 Steamer that came in a ready to run set.  Most of the the time it runs fine.  Other times the engine gets stuck in one direction, usually reverse.  I usually run the engine conventionally with a z1000 brick and controller.  At first I thought it may be the buttons on the controller not dropping the voltage enough but the other day I ran it in DCS with the remote commander and it did the same thing.  If I turn the power off and on at the power strip it will start up and run fine again.  Any ideas as to what can be causing this?  I bought the engine last November so it is still under warranty.

Does this engine have a backup light that goes on in reverse?  The directional lighting and the directional motor control are different "circuits".  So if it's just the motor control that occasionally gets stuck (and the lighting is always working) then you have a problem in the motor control which I'd say it's time to play the warranty-card.

OK, no backup light.  As this is a PS3, does the headlight dim upon entering reverse and then go to bright upon entering forward?  Again, the idea is to confirm that the engine is indeed receiving the change-of-direction command and that it's "just" the motor control circuit that gets stuck.  So if you can use the headlight brightness as a direction indicator and it contradicts what the motor is doing, then it's warranty time.  The nightmare with these intermittent issues is sending it in and of course it works for them so it comes back as-is and you go around in circles.

If no headlight dimming in reverse, if memory serves, on the last step in Station Announcements when the engine is leaving the station I think it blasts 2 or 3 toots automatically depending on fwd or rev.  So, again, if the sounds suggest the engine thinks its direction is one way but the motor goes the other way, that would "prove" the engine is receiving the direction commands and there's an internal motor circuit problem.
