I'm finally getting around to building the #320 Korber roundhouse I purchased at York several years ago.

   Some questions:

      1. How close to the rear wall should the tracks extend? I was at the Baltimore house several years back but don't remember.

      2. Has anyone ever installed operating doors on one of these? Seems like it would be a natural.

The 320 is slightly smaller than the 304.   The tracks extend to within an inch of the rear wall of the house.  Some of the large engines will take close to the 28" available on the 304.  The 304 also has an extender kit that adds a cube to the end for additional space.

I've been in several roundhouses on the GTW and if I remember correctly, the storage tracks (far side of the RH) ended pretty close to the wall - within 8 feet or so. The service tracks had 15-20 feet of space in the front to which an assortment of tooling, benches, and in-process components were arrayed. Engines on the storage tracks were ready to go but the fires were banked. It would take over a half hour to get one out of the RH and over to the coal tower. Another 15-20 minutes later the engine would head over to the coach yard and tie onto the cars for the move to the passenger station. Mind you that was over 50 years ago...

TT module is 4ft X 4ft
RH module is 4ft X 4ft

This set up on my layout was done 5' X 7' with a smaller TT, same Korber 304 house. The TT is a Diamond Scale with a 26 1/2" bridge.

Most of us who have a TT and RH are already pressed for space as it is. Even though it would be great to have 15'-20' between the end of the track and the back wall, we just don't have the extra 4"-5" to give up on the inside of the RH. Our tracks pretty much go all the way back so we can fit a Bigboy in every stall.

 

Obviously this is not a Korber kit, but we still needed every inch we could get to fit articulated engines inside the RH. The track that goes behind the RH just clears the back wall with a 21" passenger car, but its a reverse loop so it doesn't get used that much anyway, unless they are delivering equipment to the facility, then they can unload a flat car right there at the freight door.

MikeCT,

Thanks for the photo of the T module. I have been having trouble laying out the wye track in a few designs I have been working on. I wanted the wye closer to the switches and it just doesn't work easily. I like how you dropped it close to the TT to fit the curves from the switches.
