I hope all had a good Memorial Day weekend and thanks for your replys. I just finished benchwork and top for 5 1/2 ft x 12 foot layout. Runinng MTH Z500 transformer to TIU for lashup MTH SD 40-2 PS3 and Sd 40-2 dummy, and MTH AC 6000 PS2 and AC 6000 dummy and 10 MTH Premier TOFC cars might run, or more often trips breaker. If I turned on lead SD 40 smoke - breaker would trip. Short separate trains would run ok, but adding a few more cars trips the breaker. I do not have a lot of experience but somehow think these powered units should be able to pull more cars. In other posts I have seen additional protective circuit breakers and a book mentioned regarding MTH electronics, probably good things to have. After work I look forward to any comments and suggestions. Again, thanks for your experience and help. Richard

I'm not an expert at this, but it happened to me with a Z1000 power supply + TIU. The reason was I had too many passengers cars running. Their lights soak up the power. Many have converted the lighting to the LED lighting system. I'm sure you will be getting more advice from the experienced forum members. I bought a Z4000 power supply and no longer have a problem, but I need to convert to the LED system. It's just better.
Richard the z500 is only 50 watts did you try with only one power engine ,do you have switches or lights on it that all draw's power I think it only has a 6 amp breaker to thing's like that will trip the breaker ,the one engine will pull about 30 car's if the curves are not to tight like 031 or 042 I hope this will help you.

More cars = More load = more power demanded by the motor driver.
A smoke unit will eat up almost 2 amps worth of current draw. When you only have 50 watts and a 4 amp breaker to work with, it doesnt take long. The 500s used to come with the very basic starter sets, but even MTH is now supplying 1000's with the sets. Use the Z500 to power accessories or the TIU input, and get Z1000, or the Lionel 180W powerhouse bricks. 1 brick per track and you shouldnt have issues.
Richard, you need more power!!
Get the MTH Z-1000 as it is a 100 watt transformer and it will work very well with all MTH engines.

Yep, A Z500 is only good for about 2.7Amps at full voltage.
or 5A at 10VAC setting. Not gonna go fast or far with a longer consist.
Not a lot of power there, those were in Starter sets for a reason, Small trains only need small power.
Thanks for great replys. Outer track 60" fastrack, inner is 48" , But as was asked - are there switches? - yes, seven. I wil be getting a higher rated transformer. Thanks again for your help!!
