A friend has an NW 611 2-rail loco/tender from about 1997-98. He wants to locate/understand all the wires inside the loco. His hope is to integrate an updated control board in the tender. There are 4 wires running to the tender (red, white, yellow, black as pictured). Can someone please help me identify the wires and understand if they can be used to control the train (motor,lights,track leads etc).

Since the engine is 2 rail, I would say the board is used for constant light and smoke unit in the loco (if equipped). The white plug is probably for the tender light.
Go look at the engine side. I converted one of these awhile ago, but since this is 2Rail DC I do think the track power is direct to the motor. Normally to wires carry track power and the other 2 are motor, but for this do not think it works that way. That board may just be for a directional light. Again, the wires in the engine side will tell you what they do. G
