Peter,

thanks for the photos of the Fort Pitt Hi Railers.  I see some scenes I haven't seen before.  That old craggy dead tree for one.  Great!  I hope to go to Greenbergs in Monroeville this summer, so I will see them again there.  They are a great bunch of guys!!

Alibatwomble -

The loco is current-production Lionel Pilot Series - the "Pilot" locos come unpainted.

(Actually they are well-painted in a clear overspray.)

MTH has a similar "Engineering" series (I have the French Chapelon 2-3-1).

As a modeler of sorts, the model itself can stand alone as a thing of interest to me.

The prototype is the Pennsy 6-8-6 experimental direct-drive steam turbine from the 1940's; there was only one, scrapped. It was supposedly smooth, and a crewman was quoted once, as I recall, saying that "it would go like the wind".

Inefficient at low speeds and where the throttle needed frequent adjustment - like on a

railroad. But that's what "experimentals" are for.

Here are some pictures of an IC side door caboose A friend built the caboose and I lettered the caboose. The Caboose started off life as a Lionel Rock Island caboose.

Here is the Prototype

I used decals from a supplier recommended to me on the forum. If you would like to hear my critique of the decals send me a note at the email address in my profile. I had to use 20 year old decals for the New date and built date because this information on the decal card I purchased was impossible to cut out without damaging the decal.  The final results were not the best, but at least I now have an IC side door caboose.

Peter,

Thank you for your great pictures of the Ft. Pitt set up in the White Hall at the April York.  There are more pictures of each and every module posted on the Ft. Pitt website:

WWW.HobbyTrain.Collectors.Org under the Pics section.

Mark,

There are TWO modular groups in Pittsburgh.  There is the Ft. Pitt Hi-Railers that were at York and the Pittsburgh Independent Hi-Railers who set up at the Greenberg shows in Monroeville.  This is why there are different modules that you haven't seen before in Monroeville.

It's 1944 and as Fireman Lou Johnson tops off the tender with water for the daily local run to Maryville, Engineer Pat O'Connor climbs down from the cab of New York Central Ten-Wheeler #827 to grab his copy of the Williamsport Times.   Troops on furlough and travelling on the Mid-Atlantic Railway System at their own expense always receive a reduced fare.

Hope you're having a great Memorial Day Weekend!  Bo

Mark,

The Ft. Pitt guys are a great bunch, for sure, but the Monroeville Greenberg show is usually done by the Pittsburgh Independent Hi-Railers (Pittsburgh has two modular clubs).  We do have a common member between the two clubs (Matt), so there is often some confusion.  I'm not saying that Ft. Pitt won't be there, though (I have no knowledge of their schedule beyond their regular appearances), since this coming Greenberg show coincides with this year's LOTS annual convention, which might mean that it will be a bigger show than usual.

Andy

prrron thanks for posting this. haven't seen this car for a long time and it really looks great. my dad worked for the milwaukee rd for over 42 years and was a  electrician  in the western av coach yard and when ever they had a problem with any of the business cars they brought it to him to do the repairs. when the big snow storm hit in 1967 he was allowed to sleep in it as long as he stayed till more people showed up. he got to sleep in it for 2 nights. thanks again

Matty,

Ah ha!!!  Thank you for setting me straight.  I am thinking about the Pittsburgh Independent Hi Railers.  They are the fellows I have met.  Then I have not seen the Fort Pitt Hi-Railers layout or met them before.  I will have to keep this straight.  Now I will be on the lookout for both!  This is excellent news to me, that there are two groups in the Pittsburgh area!

Andy,

Thank you too for the explanation.  Yes, you are one of the guys I have met, but I guess I had the wrong group.  As I said to Matty, this is good to know.  Eventually, I will get this straight.

Thank you.

Also thank you to both groups for the excellent modular layouts that you take places.  I can see it must be a lot of hard work setting up for these shows!
