Very nice Mike!
Today was a good day but a slow day. I started laying down the plywood after I found out the wall behind the table was not true so when I started to screw down my first piece it was off. Usually it is my cutting that is messed up. It was just slow because I am trying to use up scrap wood I have laying around so this table will have three pieces screwed down. So all and all it was a good day. Maybe after dinner I'll try finishing off the last piece. Pic......Paul

No but nothing runs like a Deere, And I spent 36 years working at Caterpillar.
LOL. we have a Deere tractor at the college I work at. Been a great machine for us. We use it for everything landscape work, snow, and a back hoe for trenching. Had a couple of 6 wheel gators buy they died a couple of years ago.

Hey Paul, don't be to hard on yourself. We all are a little off keyster and a little slow. Heck some of us don't even know what way to move to become plumb! Looks good from my house!
Amazing work done by you guys over the last few weeks. I hope my layout will be as half as good as some of you.
I haven't had to much layout time lately but tonight I snuck into the layout room after the kids went to bed and played with plaster cloth.
Hope to have all the plaster cloth done by the end of the month then to weather the rails and start ballasting.
Some footage of recently acquired equipment:
This is the "Emphysema Express", so called because it came from a rather nicotine-stained estate collection:
True to its name, the Express belched nasty-smelling smoke and had a barely wheezing whistle. One new whistle board and one fresh 'Pac-Man' packing in the smoke generator later, the whistle is nice and loud and the smoke smells of smoke fluid, like it should.
This Katy caboose is a nicely painted and decaled job, based on an early postwar chassis. Needed the wire to the light and the pickup roller replaced, but now its light shines out on the layout!

After 13 months of building, laying, tearing out, relaying, wiring and whatnot, I finally ran a train! I have a lot of switches to wire up but all the wires are in place and just waiting to be connected to terminals. I'm very excited.
Only had a few minutes this morning. I checked on the drying of the paster cloth. It is rock solid but still damp. I laid the track back over it and placed the buildings where I want them to go. Tonight the cloth should be pretty dry and I can actually screw the track right too it. I hope to get more plaster done tonight but i am running out. Need to put in another order at Amazon.

Congrats! Its always nice to get to that point!
Ok so I had a few more minutes before I had to get ready for work so I screwed the track down and ran a train.
Enjoy the video!
Last night, okay more like 1:00am in the morning, 6 weeks (1 week of that I was out of the country) to the day after starting my benchwork, I sent a train around the track. Of course my helper was RIGHT in the middle of it.
**If you want to read: Backstory of the only car on the track. I'm 35 and my best friend in this world is one of my uncles, is that strange? Anyway, the first car that my twin and I had was a 1981 Monte Carlo... given to us by that uncle. They've always been one of my favorite cars since then and my uncle's too. Well at Christmas 2016 I was telling him I'd love to have a 1/43 Monte Carlo SS for my layout (he collects trains occasionally), but they are somewhat expensive. He didn't know they made them, so he bought 2 from the 'bay and had them on display sitting on a flat car. Two weeks ago a package arrived at my house. It was a NS (he knows those are the engines I have) flat car with two 1/43 SS Monte Carlos on it. Turns out, he bought 2 for himself and 2 for me. I told my wife that night that the first train that goes around the track will have that car and that car only behind it. May be stupid, but it was special to me.
Congratulations on the first run, Mike; and on the Monte Carlo's!
Great Job Mike, it's not stupid, My uncle in Texas is one of my best friends!

Sounds like you have 2 daughters that married the "uncle" & his "nephew"!
Got all the 120 feet of new track prepped for painting. And the weather is saying "lol! you thought you'd get to paint it!!" Nothing but more rain in the forecast for the next couple of weeks and we are already a foot over normal rainfall for the year. So switched gears and started to tackle the last two jobs on the roundhouse; floor inserts for the tracks and getting the inside details installed (work platforms, grinder, tools, etc.).
We worked like crazy to get the upper level benchwork and roadbed done to get sacked by the weather here in Protest-landia.

Yes, I am hoping to get my train room painted tomorrow; at least one coat. That is if I don't have to spend too much time helping my aunt and my dad. Today is the first warm day, and the grass will be needing cut before we know it; much less rake up all the leaves and junk the winter winds deposited.
..... track came undone under the new mountain. (note to self, screw it down next time) Lost Power to mainline. (I had the wrong transformer plugged in) Test run of "Ole Reliable" did not make it under the Hutch in the corner (the 2 year old had stacked the elephants, lion, tiger and... AND Giraffe on the rails.... "Hiding" he said). New tunnel exit at the top of the HELIX sagged when the papermache was applied, and the TALL caboose does not fit the exit anymore. Sent the Lionel Crane and a dozen workers to do a lift and bracejob a the tunnel entrance. AAnd the 5 year old put the Brand New Engine Rebuild on the track to test the smoke......cause Papa said it would be Soo Coool.... Did NOT run. So he wanted to add switches insted. .... .. .... they dont work.
Thas what I did on my layout today. I hope the Dozen Lionel Worker Elves fix stuff over-night... (Note to self, TEST the **** engine before the GrandKids come, and then Re-Package the blame thing, so he gets to "Open The New UPS BOX"!!)
Oh, I get whats important...... and with anyluck, they will again visit in the morning. We will have Pancakes and snasauges, and milk and cookies, and hugs and all the really important things.
Leaving the layout fixes for the ELVES...... (I love being the grandpa....)
Almost to 300 pages on this post! Wow I never thought this one post would last 4 years and 300 pages!
Ran some trains with my son this morning. I also added in a 2 track spur at the grain elevator to be able to park more freight cars on the layout and be able to have a track to deliver cars too.
Today I got the last piece of plywood on the table. Now my focus will be on a couple of small extensions off the tables to hold the bridge abutments of the Lionel die cast bridge and the two girder bridges on either side. I have to figure out how low off the tables so the tracks will rest on the table tops. Tomorrow train show in Massillon, Ohio and then a trip over to Menards to hopefully pick up my Morton salt building.............Paul
#JD Thats is really handsome , and the new spur as well. You are right to be proud <salute>
Some great work being done here this weekend!
Miggy, just because you check it and rebox it, doesn't mean it will work again when the grandkids open it and put it on the track. That's how things sometimes work for us GRANDPA'S!

It would be a shame to cover that nice wood with grey paint. Maybe a grey stain?
So who's gonna wind up at the top of page 300????? Maybe a gi-raffe??
Good afternoon,
Rain and cool today, what a change a day makes.
No grand kids this weekend so quiet here, just brainstorming.
The reason I have been thinking a concrete color guys is because I will be using these 2.5" x 1/2" strips with rounded corners as the pylons under the rest of the elevated loop and want them to look like concrete. Guess I will wait till the black FRP sheet gets here before I decide. I do like the wood but the 2.5" x 1/2" strips would not look right in stain or anything close to a real pylon with stain.
Today all I did was look over things and I may add something to the bottom of the bent legs so I can fix them to the table from the top and not have to try to drill and screw up from the bottom.
I did see this Stamped Concrete color by SW. May go with it.

As for me after dealing with my truck and other things. I actually got something done train wise last night. Yes Finally. Finished kadee conversion of my newest addition to my roster A pair of Atlas GN GP35s. Note the last pic shows the Atlas GP35(right) connected to a MTH GN GP35. You can see the difference in the pilots. I also didn't realize that the pilot on the MTH engine was bent upwards until I saw the pic.
Nice to hear you have your truck done. But now back to your trains, they look great but one question is how do you plan on fixing the pilot that is tilting up a little ?
mike g. posted:Nice to hear you have your truck done. But now back to your trains, they look great but one question is how do you plan on fixing the pilot that is tilting up a little ?
Bend it back carefully.
I only had a few minutes after church today so I did a little bit of plaster cloth near the river. This is where my "rapids" will go, and hence the name of the town "Little Rapids, MI". This name goes along with 2 real cities in Michigan, Grand Rapids and Big Rapids.
The first part of the day was going to a train show. Packed show. I felt like a sardine going up and down the aisles. Found nothing so I headed down to Menards to picked up my Morton salt building and dry walls screws. Well I learned from the girl at the desk that when you get an email to say it is at the store it does not mean it is ready for pickup. I felt bad but I will head back down tomorrow to get it. So this afternoon I worked on cutting pieces for braces that will hold plywood for the bridge abutments. It took some time and patience to figure out exactly how long to cut them. Needed 7 1/4 inches from the bottom of the abutment to the bottom of the girder bridges. Now I have to cut 1x 4's to hold the plywood. At least I am getting to use up small pieces of lumber rather them throwing them out. Maybe after dinner I'll have a chance to do more but if not tomorrow I will after I get back from Menards.....Paul

Hey Paul, sorry to hear your Morton building wasn't ready for you. I would think you had time to walk around and see what else they had to offer in Train items. So the big question is, now that you had extra room in the car on the way home, what other rolling stock did you pick up?
I won't tell Bob! Its just between us!
MIKE G, no other trains. The Menards in Massallon Ohio does not stock trains after Christmas. So I have to order and have it sent to the store. Plus I have to pace myself because next month is York........Paul
Did a bit of touchup on my Pennsy NW2:
Used a bit of black Sharpie to cover up the overspray. Won't win any model contests, but at two feet and in motion, it looks fine!

Reworked two of the new sidings in the yard and began planning for the home made transfer table at the far end of the ladder in the yard.
This morning I traveled south to the Washington, Pa. area to the spring TCA show. I will leave the negatives out and just say "It was a train show" and finally found something to buy. First I picked up the two standard gauge motors a guy fixed for me and later bought a #8 Standard box electric from him. He said he got it out of a house and he hadn't done anything to it. I believed him -sort of dirty and scratched but everything is there. Showed life on the test track but not running yet. tried but needs a good cleaning first. I was strictly on a Standard gauge hunt and picked u a standard passenger car shell the someone started to fix up. Not sure if i will complete it or take some brand new parts and pieces off it. Spent part of the lasted afternoon putting the rebuilt Bild A Loco motor back in the engine. Plenty of Standard gauge stuff was there but I thought it was a little light on O gauge items. I had fun and glad that I went. My last one here.

Today my grandson Ian and I went to a train show in Massillon, OH. Hadn’t been to one in many years, so I was a blind newbie wandering the aisles. I relearned two things:
1) if it’s there and you want it, grab it, pay for it and don’t worry about carrying it around with you for the rest of the show. Lost out on a nice Pennsy MTH passenger car for $20.
2) If you want track (which I did), remember to look low and under tables. Space is at a premium so the cheap stuff seems to be hidden under the tables. Saw a guy durn near hugging two boxes of really nice O27 (what I was after) while paying some amazingly low price!
Oh yeah, 2.5) Practice your Salmon swimming skills so you can squeeze through the crowds!
Ian reminded me that he has wanted a Thomas engine for quite some time, but they seem to be rare, at least at this show. I found one brand new set that the guy was good enough to pull out the track and brick and reduce the price to what I had in hand! Not what I had planned to spend $ on, but some things are just worth it!
So here’s what we did later on the carpet express: https://youtu.be/jnFp1SalUXM
I bought the Lionel Standard gauge #8 at the TCA show and it wouldn't run. Cleaned the rollers, wheels and commutator with CRC electro solvent and boy !! Did it take off. One of the best running engines I have. Amazing.

Must be that time of year my daughter's cat doing the same thing.
I am on a roll, finished another Kadee conversion last night. MTH GN GP30 using Mario's Lionel GP7/9 mounts modified to fit the opening in the pilot. Tried something new to hid the seams and it turned out well. will document it with next upgrade.
The CEO's renovation is moving along. Waiting on some materials from the plumbing supply for the heat in the room so I managed to squeeze in a little train time last night.
I re-wired the motors in a K-Line S-1 to series from parallel. Needed to slow it down a bit. Hard to spot cars with a Corvette
It's much better now.

I'll sum up what this past weekend had in store for me:
- Fixing a RealTrax switch with a burnt copper ribbon and a disconnected ground piece
- Replacing a dead battery in a PS2 Switcher with a BCR
- Replacing a dead battery in a PS1 F3 with a BCR
- Pulling a squealing smoke unit out of a Railking Allegheny 2-6-6-6 and oiling the impeller shaft
- Adding 2 spring plungers as latches for entry door
- For the first time ever, run trains and just have fun. That was exciting and great feeling of accomplishment, especially with ONLY one almost head on collision. Oops, keeping track of those switches will take some time.
1) The Razorback Traction Company is remodeling! Assistance requested! Details here:
https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/t...w-transformer-wanted
2) From the RTC shops, a couple of works in progress:
Rear: Preliminary mockup of a concept allowing my HO scale gi-raffe car to run on three rail. The basic idea is to mount an operating lever on a flat car, then run a linkage to the HO scale car...
Front: Remember all those tubes left over from the Howard Roark Memorial Storage Facility? Guess what fits in the ends?
Anybody interested in making custom length tank cars, drop me a line. I got plenty of tubes to spare...

Didn't do anything on the layout today but tomorrow is a rain day. I got my Morton Salt building and took it and put it on the basement layout. Not where it is going to end up I put it next to the power plant to compare the two. Two impressive buildings. The lighting is awesome and the kicker is not one but two animated signs on the building. But that's it for tonight because tomorrow I plan to get the areas for the bridge in. Get some cross braces on the table I just put together and put some shelving under it so I can store more trains. Pics................Paul
