  The mail retrieval went hand in hand with this 9/10/17 News Herald Mi. issue I used to show size. It had a photo&story of the inspection of footings of a very old rail bridge converted to Grosse Isle traffic use long ago. Ive found the old piling for its older eastern sister via Google earth and clear water days. That led to searching the UP of Michigan for pilings associated with a northern rr logger Con Culhane and a post about him in the Canadian lines washout thread.

Somewhere in there I saw Gandy Dancers name and decided it was Gandy Dancer Blues Day and started with some Leadbelly prison tunes in a YouTube playlist.

Half an hour later I heard something I'd head before long ago as a kid. The blues tunes were part of the old Alan Lomax recordings, and it swung to French Canadian fiddle music you might have heard in the logging camps 100-150 years ago. I can sing it,...kinda, but don't really know what it means (happy new year? Lovely New Year?) I think it is traditional, Ive heard other versions I'm sure. What struck me was how the rhythm was done and the voice. I went to look and sure enough, a Michigan man was singing and sitting down, tapping out the rhythm. Edward King was a friend of Great Grandpa's I think. I'd seen that sitting tap dance before.....while waiting for stories on Paul Bunyon and Babe....Somewhere in there is my intro to Con's stories too.    So in music and language, I have a new angle to do more research on Con, maybe it's not all forgotten.

    I don't care much for gambling, I just always liked the graphics. The lotto? Maybe once or twice a year tops...mostly because my step-dads brother hit the big jackpot twice in Ohio. I think there was like 10mil. left for his kids. It even took time for me to figure out 777 was a slot machine win, thats how foreign the concept is to me.

    I TOLD you my music ranged from symphonys, to the Carter family, to Punk , Rap, and even obscure Death Metal. Add a smile via comedy or shear happiness and I'm hooked.

Actually I like most anything off the beaten path.

My only real regret in life is not getting to see more of the world when I could still manage it. I hope you all get the chance..and Mark, clearly too

   I have two matching jackpot signs now. I hit the neighbors up for theirs. If nobody wants them, I'll do something eventually; even if it is just salvaging the leds. I have an idea, but feel they would make better building signs.

I had no idea what 777 signs meant either when I started taking our older daughter across the state line into Ohio for college.  She finally found ou from the natives and enlightened me.  I consider even the lowest cost gambling as a poor investment!  :-)

Yea, but I've thrown more to the "hobos" downtown without being asked.  

  Once or twice a year when I'm feeling "rich" or lucky makes little difference to the train budget.

First off, I love the paneling on the walls.  Second, the shelves look great!  Third, are the Sharks in a Baldwin demo livery?  I have never seen it before.  Fourth, put up enough shelves, and you can run trains!!

Was in New York yesterday. Mark good luck with the cataract surgery. Wife had both of her eyes done, piece of cake. Brian, like the movie, The Never ending story, it has been great watching your never ending shelving unfold. I got the Baldwin Demonstrator too. I picked up an extra B unit. Awesome paint scheme on it. DOBERMANN, good job on the building. Is that a Downtown Deco building by chance. Today I have to hunker down and finish cleaning up the basement and the layout for my hosting of my local club tomorrow. And while I am on the computer I'll place an order for some more Ross switches I need.................Paul

Hilti metal concrete anchors. I like the anchor type you have to drill for.

Better yet are the machine screw metal expanders that can fold over inside a hollow bricks interior.(has to be hollow or a hole gouged wider as it recesses.)

I don't trust the plastic expansion types because I've seen folks hurt by their falure (ever see a heavy 5x10' print on wood knock a sweet old lady for a loop?)

Your soft cure issue is lack of fresh air, temp, or high humidity. The first two are most likely imo.

Look at the concrete screws by Tapcon and others. A little less aggressive than the Hilti shots.  Another option may be to shoot down a sleeper on the tread and then fasten the finished tread with small nails.

Thank you, Bob!!  Yes, now that the sun is going down sooner, I notice driving at night is becoming a problem.  All the oncoming headlights have big rainbow halos around them!  I'm going to try to avoid it.

That 6-hour traffic jam last week made him timid!

Well, not so much *on* my layout as *for* my layout...I ordered a 4-directional traffic signal from Berkshire Junction.  I used their pole mounted signals on my prior layout and they still work fine, but I thought a hanging signal would look better on my new layout.  The folks at BJ are great to deal with.  I just got off the phone with Cathy (Kathy?) and she's going to send the signal on Monday.

For those of you who are interested but aren't familiar with these signals, here's a link to their web page:

These and their other electronics won't be available indefinitely, though.  The owners are looking to sell the electronics part of the business, so if you see something you like, I suggest you jump on it.

I'm glad to be easing back into my layout construction after 4 months of household projects.  I've been down to the train room occasionally to run trains and snuggle with my cat on my workbench, but that's about it.

While cleaning up and doing some laundry I cut out all buildings that were are the sheet of paper. I have lined some on the board which will be the upper level street to see which ones I will use in this are. I still have to glue them to black foam board. Once I di that I can move them around more easily rather then propping them against the Masonite. Pics...............Paul

 Weathered Bachmann log cars. Followed idea from Boulder Valley Models (no longer available), washes of weathering powder applied with alcohol over matt black base. Not happy with the rust, more rework necessary

Hey there Paul, I have to agree with Mark they are going to look great when your done! Way to go! Also you were able to fit time in to do cleaning and Laundry? WOW YOU are the MAN! IF you ever get to Washington State let me know I will save some Laundry for you to do so you wont feel out of place! LOL

MIKE G, I maybe should start going state to state doing laundry for trains instead of money LOL. Anyways after the last load was done I stayed in the basement and I got most of the track screwed down and in place on the lift out. And MIKE G I will be using your tip on using glue to hold the plaster down. The wetting of the plywood didn't work as I was laying track it was just coming off. One more small section of track to do and I saw through all the tracks so I can lift out the section.  A couple of pics...............Paul

Looking GREAT there Paul! I sure hope the glue works, worked well for my concrete!

can't wait to get the new layout going so i can get these on some rails......
