I have a newer diesel that can be converted to 2 rail from 3. I wanted to know the process of doing this, ask if others had done this and hear how they liked the result.

I know it probably does not matter but mine is a SD70M. It came with the hi rail trucks and swinging pilots of a hi rail engine. I am going to get the 6 axel scale wheel conversion kit but I wanted to know where to proceed from there.

Thank you for any input.

(This is my first operable 2 rail O scale engine. I do have a CLW Pacific brass kit that I am slowly building.)

For swapping the wheels, I would suggest doing a single axle at a time and making sure you have the exact correct replacement in the same position.

Other than keeping them orientated, it's pretty straight forward and they come with instructions.

The problem for you would be to get your hands on replacement fixed pilots. The other method is to make a spacer shim and modify the included pilot to a fixed one. You can lengthen the handrails after if you choose. There have been posts here by many, including a person who offers shims already made for this purpose. I'll go search for his post.

I really try to buy the 2 rail versions whenever I can.
