I received a phone call today from a train friend who wanted to know why I was selling so much of my train collection. I found that to be quite an interesting question. It was actually difficult to explain. I guess the idea I'm hanging my hat on is that I'm enjoying what is on the layout so much. I have accumulated much more than I can use or display. Plans for locomotives and cars are taking a back seat to enjoyment. 

 

I run my Legacy and Vision locos and I don't want to take them off of the layout. I began to think of what I would prefer to sell and my list is growing page after page. This is layout and scenery year. I'm going to focus on what I really love.  .  .  .telling stories with layout vignettes. So  .  .  .  The locos and cars are going and our time will be used to tell stories.

 

Amazing. So York will be for scenery and friends. I feel like I'm losing weight.

We'll go back in time to a simpler age when, as a boy, I put my head close to the tracks and made believe I was watching real trains. 

 

Back to the future  .  .  .  Has a nice ring to it.

I see what you mean I have a few favorite engines that I would never part with and I have some that I don't know why I purchased. So I'm selling some of them off.

Your right Eliot there's only so much you can put on a layout at one time.So I will run my favorites and leave them on the track and have fun with them. But there will be room for a Lionel legacy N&W J.

I understand exactly what you mean.  I have a lot of REALLY cool cars on my shelves..... but then I've found they aren't the ones I run.  So like you I'm thinking of putting them up for sale because my focus is whats on the tracks running!  Plus, if you see something for sale you really like you can buy it because you have the room and some extra cash!

I'm also following much the same path as Eliot.  I have a fairly small layout--actually two of them--so will certainly keep most of what I have in the many display cases adorning various walls in my home, but I've virtually run out of space to add any more cases.  I've also pretty much satisfied my needs/wants for more locomotives and rolling stock even in my two roadnames of choice.  From this point on I'll be devoting far more attention to making something out of my layout beyond a lot of track and various accessories on a still pretty bare plywood top.  Over time, I'll be placing most of my excess inventory on our buy/sell board in the hope that someone else can make good use of what has been stored away for far too long.

Allan I'm pretty sure Lionel is coming out with the N&W J in Legacy, are you going to let it pass.

 

I'm selling some engines also because I have a few to many but I must have the J

from Lionel. I can't pass that up.

This is an interesting topic. I realize over the years I end up 'churning' much of my collections. I'll follow a theme to collect and build up a layout... then sell much of it to fund a new direction; then do it all again. I also discipline myself a bit by trying to park everything I have on the layout (so i remember what I have ). It also helps keep my interest in the hobby 'keen.'

On occasion, I've discovered the search for a locomotive or rolling stock is more gratifying than the posession.
