so I bought a tmcc swapped mth Amtrak p42  I want to swap it to the dash 9 railsounds 5.0 (85.00) I'm told that I need a new running chip to make the engine move (that costs 120) all and all was told 200 to swap it over to be able to have it sound like the real thing... sounds like an old school F unit right now. Is it possible to just buy the railsounds chip and drop it in and save some money or do I really need to drop that much? Pics are attached for what Is installed totally new to this.

I also attached a video so you see how ridiculous it sounds.

Order from Lionel parts online P/N 691-RS4E-03B. This is a replacement plug and play board with a GE engine sound. It won't have the Amtrak style horn, but better than the generic horn sound you have now. You don't need the Electric RR co. complete sound set-up, as you already have the power supply board and speaker. If you want the Odyssey type speed control, and oscillating ditch lights, then yes, you will have to gut the entire electronics package in the engine and start over with the Electric RR Co. electronics packages. (Which doesn't have the Amtrak 5 chime horn either.)

You can graft simply the RailSounds Commander into the existing system very simply if you like that sound better. All the RS Commander needs is serial data and track power and ground.  That's very simple to supply.Since the ERR boards are RS5 based, you will have better audio than the RS4 replacement board.

If you want operating ditch lights, the cheapest way is to buy the ERR Sound Converter.  An unadvertised feature of the $25 board is the fact that it has operating LED ditch light outputs.  Here's a link to a post where I demo the ditch light outputs.

So the sound card is that small little chip on the middle of the three bigger black chips (the small thing that says "Gend _ 05 lionel trains") and that's it

or is the sound chip that whole big black chip itself including that little black chip that says "Gend _05 lionel trains")

just want to clarify as previously stated I've never done this before and what do you guys recommend to use for tools that way I don't break anything?

Okay so I’m re visiting this topic for a little extra help. I found a railsounds 4e chip I really want. I’m wondering if it will work with this setup since this is a 4.0 setup and not a rail sounds 4E. Are they interchangeable and is it a direct drop and go or do I need other parts? Just wanna know before I pull the trigger.

And for more clarification, (as I don’t wanna mess my engine up,) what board do I yank out as I’ve never done this before and am nervous as hell

All three or the middle one with the smaller chip on it? Or is the smaller chip in that thing all I need to pull out and replace or is it the complete middle section of the board? Or is it every black board?

What im being quoted is 45.00 for the chip and it looks like the one in the middle with the smaller chip on it.  Sorry for lots of questions just need help
