In the context of the Cruise Commander, not a single thing.

The R4LC is plug compatible with the R2LC, however it has a different upgraded PIC processor, doubtless to add memory for it's use in Legacy applications.  However, the ERR units are programmed with the same C08 firmware as the R2LC they replace, and have identical functionality.

The R2LC is no longer produced, so they're transitioned to the R4LC platform, but they're keeping the same functionality as that's what the Cruise Commander is designed for.

I think I did swap them first, seems like there was some other issue mentioned. I do have other R2LCs in engines and no issues like the SD40 IC engine. It would run fine and just stop like I had hit the brakes but never lost the tmcc connection. I think then I did a reset and run it for a minute or more, then another stop. Someone, maybe Bill (MTT) told me to get an R4LC.

I think they are even though they share tech.  I have Lionel TMCC and Legacy motor Driver boards that use ERR cruise but they are slightly different in appearance.  I guess Jon can answer, but I would imagine if he is the owner of the company it is a royalty thing and they don't share profit and losses.  Plus it is cleaner relationship if he has R4LC made and programmed directly as far as defect items and such.  But I am just surmising.   G
