So experts what do I need?

I have a Legacy system. I am using mostly Fastrack but also have some 0-27 tubular I plan on using. Power is either an older ZW (currently being checked out at my LHS before I plug it in! I am not a fool) or I have several older transformers from the 70s and a few CW80's out of RTR sets.

I plan on having 4 loops on carpet central for now. I will be running 1 Legacy Locomotive, 1 TMCC and 2 conventional. Each on their own loop.

What do I need in terms of hooking system to track, Surge protection etc? Can I control 2 loops conventionally from Legacy? More than 2?

Wiring recommendations? I read on here every 6 feet.

You need additional components to control conventional equipment from Legacy. Either a modern ZW, PowerMaster, or TPC. PowerMasters (old style) require a bridge device. Legacy version is coming out soon.

Dump the old transformers. The Mike Reagan video will tell you that one CW-80 has more output than one old ZW output. If you are using modern trains, use modern electronics. Use the old transformers for lights.

For what you are doing (i like it) a new ZW-L would put you over the top and do the job right.

Regarding the frequency of wire connections, every 6' does not take into account the number of connectors (pins), which is where your real voltage drops occur. But I wouldn't want to say how frequently you should connect for Legacy, as I run conventional. I'll let someone else speak to that.

A ZW-L is a wonderful dream for the future but for now I will have to make do with what I have. Am wondering about inline fuses for protection and such. Also the Z4000 certainly has a much more attractive price tag.

But you would need two of them. 4000 only has two variable taps.
