That's the geometry unit or "brick" as its affectionately know by railfans. It has sensors and gadgets and thing-a-majigs all inside to gather data on the track, without having to interrupt operations on specific rail sections. You'll usually find this just behind the power in the consist.
I found a dealer that still had these Alco PA engines from the MTH 2017 Vol. 2 catalog. Then I found another that had the 5-car passenger set. And now I have less money.

I would soooo have to fix that because I would soooo want to run it!!!
I'm not a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, but I get a lot of their stuff cheap at open-air markets here in Mexico. And they make all their tracks incompatible, so you have to buy a new set of tracks every time they change the trains a little.
They make a high-quality battery-powered set of locos that require a special track, and that track is no longer available in Mexico. BUT, a large department store managed to get a bunch, and within a week, only two overpriced boxes were left.
There is more track than my lay-out can handle, and I'm taking everything down next week anyway (to set up my Christmas display.) But I spent a couple of pleasant hours moving stuff around to get a small set-up--the Thomas tracks are blue, with orange switches.

30” perfect for long box. Next year it comes to York
The only thing cool about this is the price. I went to an estate sale last weekend that actually turned out to be an auction. There was this junk box with about 100 sections of rust free post war o27 track, 20 sections of very clean brown tie, and Marx Wabash bridge. Nobody there was interested so I won the auction for $2.50, plus $.25 buyers premium

My wife went Menards tonight Christmas shopping and she came home with this and said it’s my Anniversary gift. We’ve been married 22 years today. I am blessed to have such a great wife who is always thoughtful of everyone besides herself.

Back to topic... latest addition to the fleet I managed to snag at a good price.... Lionel Visionline Niagara. ...simply awesome. ....now back to constructing my tunnel on the other side of the layout.
