Lionel Legacy GP38-2

In the 2008 volume 2 catalog, Lionel had a pair of D&H GP38-2's. There weren't any others. A quick search turned up an Alaska GP38-2 with TMCC. What tooling were they using to make those? I'm also curious what they used for sounds. I almost want to say they used the K-Line tooling. Also, who is in possession of the tooling now? I'd imagine if Lionel had the tooling for them they'd be making them already, there's an almost infinite amount of roadnames and paint schemes that can be applied to them.

I had the Alaska. Don't know about the tooling, but K-Line is a good guess. The secret on these is that they are Legacy with Odyssey I, Railsounds 4.0, not TMCC like the listing. The detail is very nice. baby Fat boy for a speaker.

 

Nice puller, good sounds, chatter is standard. Nice horns.

 

ARR painted theirs in the new scheme. They still run two of them. So, when the SD70Mac came out on BTO, I upgraded my fleet and sold it because of the paint scheme.

 

I'd buy one or two with the new paint scheme.

These were K-Line molds, I believe, that Lionel started using during the relatively brief period when K-Line was being produced by Lionel. Below is the K-Line Alaska GP38 from earlier when K-Line was still in operation. I vaguely recall that Lionel lost the K-Line molds when they were reclaimed by another company - don't recall the details, but someone else will likely be able to jump in on that.
